ASP.NET Core 6 Hosting

There are 2 huge architectural changes in ASP.NET Core 6. Firstly, it’s much leaner – e.g. no longer requires System.Web.dll. Secondly, it’s modular – almost all features are implemented as NuGet packages.

Microsoft keep up to date their technologies, the previous version is ASP.NET Core 5, and now they have released new ASP.NET 6. The problem is there are only few Windows hosting providers that really support this newest ASP.NET Core 6. So, in this article I will advise several hosting providers that have support ASP.NET Core 6. I have tested them before letting you know. Keep reading to know more!

How to Find Best ASP.NET Core 6 Hosting?

Following important qualifying factors that you need to consider while evaluating best ASP.NET Core 6 hosting providers

1. ASP.NET Core 6 Hosting Features

This is really important when selecting ASP.NET Core 6 hosting providers. You may need to check whether they have support latest ASP.NET Core 6 version. You also need to check their disk space, bandwith, domains, email space, MSSQL databases, etc. Please just select the plan that meet your requirements.

2. Technical Support

How is their support. Can you reach them easily? Do they have 24/7 support time? Is it via phone, live chat, email, or other? Just kindly check with them directly.

3. Price Factors

No one want to pay expensive price. I also know that. But, how much that we need to spend reliable ASP.NET Core 6 hosting? It is hard to determine, right? My personal experience is to get best and reliable ASP.NET Core 6 hosting, you need to spend at least $5.00-$8.00/month. Never go with FREE hosting, you can’t rely on them, you will waste your time, and the worst factor might be you can lose your files.

4. Reliable Servers

This is related with the price that you pay for ASP.NET Core 6 hosting. If you only pay for $1.00/month or even free hosting, DON’T expect to get reliable ASP.NET Core 6 hosting!! Don’t complain that your server often go up and down like roller coaster.

You’ll get what you pay for

5. Uptime Statistics

You don’t want that your site down 2-3 times a week, right? Moreover if our site is really important, we need 99.99% uptime, right? It all related with the price that you want to spend.

Below, I will advise several hosting providers that support ASP.NET Core 6 and I have reviewed many hosting providers previously and only few hosting providers that really meet my requirements.

Try This Best ASP.NET Core 6 Hosting!

1. ASPHostPortal – Best Value ASP.NET Core 6 Hosting

Windows hosting has a reputation for being costly, but ASPHostPortal shared ASP.NET Core 6 hosting range shows it doesn’t have to be that way.

Prices start from $1.00/month, the most basic plan, in this plan you get 1 website, 1 GB disk space, 10 GB bandwith, 24/7 support time. This plan is suitable for newbie that want to deploy their ASP.NET Core 3 to hosting server.

If you need MSSQL databases and MySQL databases, then you can start from their Host One plan. Host One comes with unlimited hosted domains, MSSQL databases up to 1 GB space, dedicated application pool, and your plan will run on their newest Windows Server 2016 or even Windows Server 2019.

Their Host Three plan is really interesting, you will get 50 GB disk space, 500 GB bandwith, unlimited email accounts, regular malware scanning, turbo speed server, and integrated Cloudflare based, this is good value for money too, it is priced at $11.46/month.

The minimum contract with them is quarterly plan, but they do have 30 days money back guarantee. You can ask for refund if you don’t satisfied with their services. Just try out their ASP.NET Core 6 hosting with minimum risk!

2. HostForLIFEASP.NET – Unlimited ASP.NET Core 6 Hosting Features

HostForLIFEASP.NET is a capable provider with a huge range of plans covering everything from basic shared products, cloud hosting, dedicated server, reseller hosting, and also domain SSL registration.

HostForLIFEASP.NET Windows ASP.NET Core 6 hosting include a capable Classic plan priced at €3.49/month. This is shared hosting product, but is is quite good, with unlimited websites, unlimited bandwith, unlimited email accounts, 2 MSSQL databases up to 1 GB space, and more.

If you go with their Business plan (their powerful plan) on shared hosting, instead of unlimited disk space, unlimited bandwith, unlimited email accounts, you will also get free site migration, automatic backups, SSD storage that increase your website speed 10 times, cloudflare CDN that claimed average of 200% faster page loads.

Your ASP.NET website will be hosted on their newest Windows Server. You can also choose Windows Server 2012. They basically will activate your account on their newest Windows Server version. Windows Server 2016 debuted many new features – Nano Server, containers, ReFS, Linux Secure Boot support – but you won’t be using these capabilities on a shared ASP.NET Core 6hosting plan.

All their shared ASP.NET hosting plan will support any of Microsoft products, such as ASP.NET 1.1, ASP.NET 2.x, 3.x, 4.x and also Classic ASP, ASP.NET Core 2.2, ASP.NET MVC 4 or 5, IIS 8.5, MSSQL 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019.

If shared hosting is not enough, then you can consider their Cloud hosting, Reseller hosting, or even their Windows Cloud Server plan. Their Windows Cloud Server plan is also offering interesting price, start from only €12.99/month.

3. UKWindowsHostASP.NET – Flexible ASP.NET Core 6 Hosting

While there are plenty of low cost ASP.NET Core 6 hosting packages around, they are not the best choice for everyone. I suspect that many users who need a ASP.NET website will also require more speed and functionality than the average customer, and budget hosting may not be good enough.

UKWindowsHostASP.NET has a range of ASP.NET Core 6 hosting plans covering personal and business-friendly shared hosting, and ranging up to highly-specified dedicated servers with the power to run just about anything.

Most of these products are distinctly short on limits and restrictions. The starter Starter plan may only support 5 domains, but you’re allowed unlimited subdomains, emails, MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server databases, and 20 GB bandwidth and 1 GB disk space. It’s priced from £2.99 (£2) a month if you sign up for the five-year plan, which is cheaper than the equivalent Windows ASP.NET hosting plans of some providers.

UKWindowsHostASP.NET also offer latest Windows Server so new customers can enjoy host their ASP.NET Core 6 website on their newest Windows Server. It also support latest MSSQL Server 2019 that you can easily create via control panel.

Final Conclusion

All three of these ASP.NET Core 6 hosting companies offer you a 99.9% uptime guarantee, so functionally, there isn’t a lot of difference between them.

My bottom line recommendation is to examine carefully the independent reviews for each company you’re considering. Then select the ASP.NET Core 6 hosting provider with the best overall reviews and customer support.

Is HostForLIFE.eu Good For ASP.NET Hosting?

Why you should use HostForLIFE.eu for ASP.NET hosting?

There are a lot of advantages to using HostForLIFE.eu to host your ASP.NET website. In this section, we will try to cover a few of them for you. So, let’s begin.

1. Support options

When vetting a website hosting solution, checking out the available support options is a must. If your website isn’t functioning as it should be, you’ll want help on deck as soon as possible – no matter what time of the day or night it is.

In terms of help and support, HostForLIFE.eu offers:

A 24/7 support system.

A detailed and comprehensive knowledgebase.

Tutorials to help customers use HostForLIFE.eu more effectively.

When working on this HostForLIFE.eu review for ASP.NET, we tested out their support system. Overall, we found their team very quick to respond and highly knowledgeable about their hosting service and ASP.NET itself.

2. Performance

Website hosting companies typically make use of a number of collaborating technologies to optimize their performance levels, along with various server locations scattered throughout the world. So let’s get into the technical part of this HostForLIFE.eu review for ASP.NET and check out the technologies available with their hosting packages:

SSD. Otherwise known as a “Solid State Drive,” this storage medium is faster than a Hard Disk Drive (HDD). HostForLIFE.eu offers this hardware on all its servers, to every customer.

Supercacher. A HostForLIFE-specific feature, which speeds up ASP.NET via three different levels of caching.

CDN. CDN is a system of servers that deliver webpages to users based on their geographic locations, increasing website speed. HostForLIFE.eu uses CloudFlare as its CDN of choice.

HTTP/2. This is a major revision of the HTTP network protocol, which further improves website performance.

ASP.NET Core. This is the newest version of ASP.NET, with further speed benefits, and can be selected from HostForLIFE.eu control panel if you wish to use it.

Finally, HostForLIFE’s servers can be found all over the Europe region. To be exact, in London, Amsterdam, Milan, Frankfurt, and Paris. That being said, the network is not huge, so you can experience lower performance if you’re catering to more remote audiences.

Now that we have discussed HostForLIFE’s performance in theory, it’s time to put it to the test in practice. In the next part of this HostForLIFE.eu review for ASP.NET, we’ll be using speed testing tools Pingdom and Load Impact to judge how well HostForLIFE.eu stands up.

Page speed tests with Pingdom

For this test, we ran our sandbox website through Pingdom three times for each of three different server locations. After tallying them up, the average times for each server were:

London: 0.563 seconds

Frankfurt: 0.645 seconds

San Francisco: 1.190 seconds

Given how quickly users will abandon a page before it loads, these results look pretty good. It’s understandable that the further a server is from a user (as was the case with Melbourne), the longer the page will load – but in this instance HostForLIFE.eu has coped well.

Basic load testing with Load Impact

Load Impact gauges site speed by simulating around 25 concurrent users hitting the homepage over a five-minute period. The results of this test were:

Load Generator: Portland, US

Test Server: Portland, US

Minimum Response Time: 0.738 seconds

Maximum Response Time: 1.480 seconds

The results from Load Impact back up those from our Pingdom tests. Overall, HostForLIFE.eu has performed admirably – and regardless of your location, site speed shouldn’t be an issue.

Pricing

Like other providers, HostForLIFE.eu offers several tiered pricing plans:

Classic (€2.97 per month): As the name suggests, this package is ideal for startups and small businesses who wish to host a single website with fewer than 10,000 visitors per month.

Budget (€4.67 per month): Great for larger organizations with multiple websites that may see up to 25,000 visitors per month.

Economy (€6.80 per month): This plan is suited to large companies boasting websites with upwards of 100,000 monthly visits.

Business (€9.34 per month): HostForLIFE’s most expensive plan is suited to large companies boasting websites with upwards of 200,000 monthly visits.

Overall pros and cons

After poring over the various elements of the company’s services in this HostForLIFE.eu review, let’s sum up our findings.

Pros

The technology used – including SSDs, CDNs and ASP.NET Core – is modern and highly reputable.

Support options are plentiful, with knowledgeable staff on hand.

Page speed was good, and load testing was equally comparable.

Many datacenters location in Europe.

For a good ASP.NET hosting solution, the pricing is competitive.

Cons

We found the HostForLIFE.eu control panel rather basic looking – a redesign is certainly in order.

ASP.NET, a server-side framework designed by Microsoft, is an ideal solution for developers to create dynamic web applications. However, choosing the best hosting options can be a critical decision to deploy your application.

ASP.NET offers various hosting options, but choosing the right one will require you to understand the framework and hosting structure before investing in a hosting plan.

What are some of the things you need to keep in mind before you host your ASP.NET pages? Read on learn more about the software, and ensure that you make the right purchasing decision.

What Is ASP.NET Hosting?

ASP.NET hosting is a web hosting plan that is perfectly compatible with your ASP.NET pages. The range of hosting plans for majorly depends on your app needs.

Hosting plans can vary in price and depend on whether you opt for basic shared hosting or dedicated server hosting.

4 Important Things to Select Your ASP.NET Hosting Provider

There are various options available for web hosting. While there is no right or wrong, choosing a service provider that checks on a few essential hosting parameters is always wise. The following checklist will help you in making the right decision.

1. Uptime Guarantee

Uptime refers to how much time your web app needs to become accessible to users. This is one of the most relevant points for consideration, as you will be investing money in your hosting, with the eventual hope of providing a quick response time.

2. Web Application Security

A web hosting provider offering solid firewalls and security features is essential for a developer. Features like SSL certificates provided by the hosting web service companies will always give you an enhanced level of protection and a reassurance to the end-user. It’s crucial for you and your users to know that your website and app are safe from potential security breaches.

3. Customer Support

Any website hosting service needs to be available round the clock to tackle customer queries. If you are a developer planning to add on more features over time, your customer queries need to be resolved with as little delay as possible. For this very reason, you need to pick a hosting company that understands, listens, and makes your query a priority.

4. Bandwidth Capacity

Enterprise-level plans are ideal for those websites and web applications that require more bandwidth. If you plan on adding more features to your website later, starting with a lower bandwidth initially might create loading issues for the developer and the user in the long run.

The Technical Requirements for Hosting ASP.NET Applications

ASP.NET runs well on Linux and Windows servers equally. Ultimately, however the optimization is better suited for Windows hosting services.

The first technical requirement for hosting is a SQL server database that will help you host initially.

In this regard, one of the most popular ASP.NET hosting companies is ASPHostPortal, as it offers various hosting packages specially designed for applications and websites developed on ASP.NET.

Other service providers include HostForLIFE.eu and DiscountASP.

Here are some technical requirements required for hosting ASP.Net applications successfully:

1. Support for ASP.NET Versions

When you’re looking for hosting services for ASP.NET pages, it is important to note that the company you are choosing supports all framework versions. Many features, from ASP.NET updates to hosting server compatibility, are beneficialcheckpoints for shortlisting a hosting provider.

Some common versions available for ASP.NET pages include editions for OS and MS SQL. Do not forget to check these versions and their availability with your hosting provider.

2. Hardware Requirements

If you wish to host a web app that will grow in the near future, you will need to update your hardware requirements as your site’s requirements expand. The rapid growth of your business requires storing the database of potential and existing users, which means more solid state drive (SSD) storage and random access memory (RAM) for your hardware.

So when you choose the hosting provider, make sure you discuss the hardware requirements before vetting a host. You can check for migrating options with the hosting provider if you need this the future.

5 Advantages Using Dedicated Server

Dedicated hosting plans might end up being an expensive up-front investment. However, using one will offer you the necessary tools you need to grow your business.

We’ve listed some of the benefits of using dedicated hosting below.

1. Security and Performance

Dedicated servers and hosts offer stable hosting services without having to worry about sharing space with any potential scammers or malicious software. Dedicated hosting provides better security, especially if your website requires FTP or SSL transactions.

2. Flexibility

Dedicated hosting providers can always customize disk space and usage requirements, software, CPU, and RAM. This flexible solution is only available with dedicated hosting plans. So if you have customized needs, dedicated hosting is your absolute choice.

3. Server Resources

All server resources are built-in within a dedicated hosting provider, which means your server will never slow down. Dedicated hosting does not let your website share its resources with any other application, which provides the much-needed space for business growth.

4. No Maintenance

Dedicated hosting is ideal for developers who do not have the time and resources to manage their services. The providers manage everything for you, from maintaining to purchasing server equipment required to host your website.

5. Full Control

Even though a hosting provider manages your website’s server, you will always have the final decision for your hosting requirements. You have complete control over your server, from deciding management tools to deploying your application.

Final Verdict

Choosing the right hosting solution for your ASP.NET pages can be a crucial decision. Keep a check on all the points discussed for maintaining a profitable and smooth operation. After all, your website must blend with the vision and goal of the business you wish to promote in the long run.

To get the best out of your web hosting, it’s best to learn the nuances of ASP.NET beforehand so that no service providers can take you for a joy ride during the initial discussions.

ASP (Active Server Pages) is a server-side scripting language released in 1996 by Microsoft. Sometimes referred to as ASP Classic, it was superseded by ASP.NET in 2002.

ASP websites require Windows servers running the most up-to-date version of Internet Information Services (IIS).

Frankly, because of the expensive Microsoft software licenses including Windows Server and MS SQL Server, there are not many users and providers as the Linux-based service in the marketplace, especially it’s hard to find a reputed provider.

Recently, with Microsoft technology being more and more mature and popular, some reputed web hosting companies have started to offer ASP.NET hosting service, like GoDaddy, but without a long time of management and operation, they are not experienced and knowledgeable enough in this aspect.

How to Choose Best ASP.NET Core 6 Web Hosts?

1. Support Latest ASP.NET Core 6 on Their Hosting Platform

This is really important when selecting ASP.NET Core hosting providers.

5. Uptime Statistics

In this post I describe application parts and how ASP.NET Core uses them to find the controllers in your app. I then show how you can retrieve the list at runtime for debugging purposes.

Debugging a missing controller

A while ago I was converting an ASP.NET application to ASP.NET Core. The solution had many class library projects, where each project represented a module or vertical slice of the application. These modules contained everything for that feature: the database code, the domain, and the Web API controllers. There was then a “top level” application that referenced all these modules and served the requests.

As the whole solution was based on Katana/Owin and used Web API controllers exclusively, it wasn’t too hard to convert it to ASP.NET Core. But, of course, there were bugs in the conversion process. One thing that had me stumped for a while was why the controllers from some of the modules didn’t seem to be working. All of the requests to certain modules were returning 404s.

There were a few possibilities in my mind for what was going wrong:

There was a routing issue, so requests meant for the controllers were not reaching them

There was a problem with the controllers themselves, meaning they were generating 404s

The ASP.NET Core app wasn’t aware of the controllers in the module at all.

My gut feeling was the problem was either 1 or 3, but I needed a way to check. The solution I present in this post let me rule out point 3, by listing all the
ApplicationPart
s and controllers the app was aware of.

What are application parts?

Application Parts allow you to share the same resources (controllers, Razor Pages etc) between multiple apps. If you’re familiar with Razor Class Libraries, then think of application parts as being the abstraction behind it.

One application part implementation is an
AssemblyPart
which is an application part associated with an assembly. This is the situation I had in the app I described previously – each of the module projects was compiled into a separate
Assembly
, and then added to the application as application parts.

You can add application parts in
ConfigureServices
when you configure MVC. The current assembly is added automatically, but you can add additional application parts too. The example below adds the assembly that contains
TestController
(which resides in a different project) as an application part.

public void ConfigureServices(IServiceCollection services)
{
    services
        .AddControllers()
        .AddApplicationPart(typeof(TestController).Assembly);
}

Note that in ASP.NET Core 3.x, when you compile an assembly that references ASP.NET Core, an assembly attribute is added to the output,
[ApplicationPart]
. ASP.NET Core 3.x apps look for this attribute on referenced assemblies and registers them as application parts automatically, so the code above isn’t necessary.

We’ve covered how you register application parts, but how do we debug when things go wrong?

Providing features with the ApplicationPartManager

When you add an application part (or when ASP.NET Core adds it automatically), it’s added to the
ApplicationPartManager
. This class is responsible for keeping track of all the application parts in the app, and for populating various features based on the registered parts, in conjunction with registered feature providers.

There are a variety of features used in MVC, such as the
ControllerFeature
and
ViewsFeature
for example. The
ControllerFeature
(shown below) contains a list of all the controllers available to an application, across all of the registered application parts.

public class ControllerFeature
{
    public IList<TypeInfo> Controllers { get; } = new List<TypeInfo>();
}

The list of controllers is obtained by using the
ControllerFeatureProvider
. This class implements the
IApplicationFeatureProvider<T>
interface, which, when given a list of application parts, populates an instance of
ControllerFeature
with all the controllers it finds.

public class ControllerFeatureProvider : IApplicationFeatureProvider<ControllerFeature>
{
    public void PopulateFeature(IEnumerable<ApplicationPart> parts, ControllerFeature feature)
    {
        // Loop through all the application parts
        foreach (var part in parts.OfType<IApplicationPartTypeProvider>())
        {
            // Loop through all the types in the application part
            foreach (var type in part.Types)
            {
                // If the type is a controller (and isn't already added) add it to the list
                if (IsController(type) && !feature.Controllers.Contains(type))
                {
                    feature.Controllers.Add(type);
                }
            }
        }
    }

    protected virtual bool IsController(TypeInfo typeInfo) => { /* Elided for brevity*/ }
}

The
ApplicationPartManager
exposes a
PopulateFeature
method which calls all the appropriate feature providers for a given feature:

public class ApplicationPartManager
{
    // The list of application parts
    public IList<ApplicationPart> ApplicationParts { get; } = new List<ApplicationPart>();

    // The list of feature providers for the various possible features
    public IList<IApplicationFeatureProvider> FeatureProviders { get; } =
            new List<IApplicationFeatureProvider>();

    // Populate the feature of type TFeature
    public void PopulateFeature<TFeature>(TFeature feature)
    {
        foreach (var provider in FeatureProviders.OfType<IApplicationFeatureProvider<TFeature>>())
        {
            provider.PopulateFeature(ApplicationParts, feature);
        }
    }

That covers all the background for
ApplicationPartManager
and features.

Listing all the Application parts and controllers added to an application

To quickly work out whether my
404
problem was due to routing or missing controllers, I needed to interrogate the
ApplicationPartManager
. If the application parts and controllers for the problematic modules were missing, then that was the problem; if they were present, then it was probably some sort of routing issue!

To debug the issue I wrote a quick
IHostedService
that logs the application parts added to an application, along with all of the controllers discovered.

I used an
IHostedService
because it runs after application part discovery, and only executes once on startup.

The example below takes an
ILogger
and the
ApplicationPartManager
as dependencies. It then lists the names of the application parts, populates an instance of the
ControllerFeature
, and lists all the controllers known to the app. These are written to a log message which can be safely inspected

A similar example in the documentation exposes this information via a Controller, which seems like a bit of a bad idea to me!

public class ApplicationPartsLogger : IHostedService
{
    private readonly ILogger<ApplicationPartsLogger> _logger;
    private readonly ApplicationPartManager _partManager;

    public ApplicationPartsLogger(ILogger<ApplicationPartsLogger> logger, ApplicationPartManager partManager)
    {
        _logger = logger;
        _partManager = partManager;
    }

    public Task StartAsync(CancellationToken cancellationToken)
    {
        // Get the names of all the application parts. This is the short assembly name for AssemblyParts
        var applicationParts = _partManager.ApplicationParts.Select(x => x.Name);

        // Create a controller feature, and populate it from the application parts
        var controllerFeature = new ControllerFeature();
        _partManager.PopulateFeature(controllerFeature);

        // Get the names of all of the controllers

        _logger.LogInformation("Found the following application parts: '{ApplicationParts}' with the following controllers: '{Controllers}'",
            string.Join(", ", applicationParts), string.Join(", ", controllers));

        return Task.CompletedTask;
    }

    // Required by the interface
    public Task StopAsync(CancellationToken cancellationToken) => Task.CompletedTask;
}

All that remains is to register the hosted service in
Startup.ConfigureServices
:

public void ConfigureServices(IServiceCollection services)
{
    services.AddControllers();
    services.AddHostedService<ApplicationPartsLogger>();
}

Below is example log message, in which an API project (ApplicationPartsDebugging.Api) references a class library (ApplicationPartsDebugging.Controllers) which contains a controller,
TestController
.

info: ApplicationPartsDebugging.Api.ApplicationPartsLogger[0]
      Found the following application parts: 'ApplicationPartsDebugging.Api, ApplicationPartsDebugging.Controllers'
      with the following controllers: 'WeatherForecastController, TestController'

Both the API app and the class library are referenced as application parts, and controllers from both application parts are available.

And yes, this was exactly the problem I had during my conversion, I’d failed to register one of the modules as an application part, shown by it’s absence from my log message!

Summary

In this post I described a problem I faced when converting an application to ASP.NET Core – the controllers from a referenced project could not be found. ASP.NET Core looks for controllers, views, and other features in application parts that it knows about. You can add additional application parts to an ASP.NET Core manually, though ASP.NET Core 3.x will generally handle this for you automatically. To debug my problem I created an
ApplicationPartsLogger
that lists all the registered application parts for an app. This allows you to easily spot when an expected assembly is missing.

There are many speed test tools to use to measure your website speed. Many of the tools now reference the Google Page Speed Insights, and some tools give great explanations as to how you can improve your website speed based on the results.

My personal experience is using Pingdom tools and Google Page Speed Insights.

Why Your Website Speed is Really Important?

As we may know that we really hate slow loading website. If our site is slow, person that access our site can leave us anytime they like. Just imagine if you have e-commerce site and you really depend on your site to make sales, it will become big issue.

Testing your website speed can also suggest other improvements such as image optimization, the need for a Worldwide CDN, or the need to remove problematic scripts or plugins. We will cover these in a related series at a later date.

Here are some of the most common reasons to use speed test tools on your website:

Investigating load time issues, including checking scripts, fonts, and plugins.

Checking minification of your scripts

Analyzing images to find large non-optimized images causing load time issues

Checking whether you have any render-blocking JavaScript or CSS

Testing Time to First Byte (TTFB)

Analyzing total load times, page sizes, and number of server requests

Checking load times from different locations around the world

Checking for issues in different browsers

Analyzing HTTP Headers (for example to check caching is working, whether cache is public or private etc.)

Checking your Content Delivery Network is configured correctly.

Understand Speed Concepts

There are few concepts you need to know about website speed. By learning a few basics, you should be able to tell the difference between the time it takes for the website page to start displaying, and the time for all the assets (images, JavaScript) to load.

Page Load Time

“Page Load Time” is the time it takes for the webpage to load fully, with all associated CSS, JavaScript, and image files so that full interaction with the website is available by the user. For example, the time between the server receiving a request to load the webpage and the browser fully loaded that webpage.

Page Rendering Time

Unlike the Page Load Time, Page Rendering Time measures the time it takes for the webpage to be ready for the user to interact with. Some webpage assets, such as images, or scripts (such as social share scripts, Google Analytics scripts, etc.) will load after the page has begun to render. However, the user is still able to interact with the website while these are loading.

With Web pages being much larger, and loading many different CSS and JavaScript files, the Page Load Time is not always the best way to measure website speed. Sometimes page speed testing services can give what we call a “false reading” by implying that your website is slow, but in reality, may be loading very quickly.

Example of Page Rendering Time

If you take our homepage here, the total load time reported by Pingdom Tools shows 1.9 seconds. However, our page starts rendering after just 0.2 — 0.3 seconds. You can see when the page starts rendering with the red box below:

That’s only 1 example, well, this will be not too accurate, so we need to check other important factors. Keep reading!

Render-Blocking JavaScript & CSS

Before a page can be loaded it has to prepare and parse the page. If it encounters an external script (such as a JavaScript file or CSS file) that prevents the parsing of the page, then it has to wait until those scripts before it can continue. Each time it encounters such as script, the browser has to contact the server where that script is located, thus delaying the Page Rendering Time.

Minification of Resources

By using minification, you can remove unnecessary characters from your HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Examples of such characters include:

White spaces

New lines

Comments (comments embedded within the code)

Block delimiters

This reduces the size of the files that need to be loaded from the server, thus saving bandwidth and causing the files to load faster.

HTTP Requests

When your browser fetches data from a server, it does so using HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol). For each file that requires to be loaded, a request to the server needs to be made. Unfortunately, browsers can only handle so many requests simultaneously. The limits on number of simultaneous requests a browser are as follows:

How many concurrent requests can a browser send to different domains at a time? What has this got to do with parallelization of request/downloads? — Quora

Opera 9+ and Safari 3+ — 4 downloads per hostname

internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3, and Chrome 1+ — six downloads per hostname

There are many ways you can reduce the number of requests such as:

Combining your CSS and JavaScript files

Inline any small snippets of JavaScript

Using CSS Sprites

Reducing assets such as 3rd party plugins that make a large number of external requests

Also, by using a CDN you can increase the number of simultaneous requests as the restrictions are per Hostname. By spreading the downloads over multiple hostnames allows for faster page load times.

Also, HTTP/2 is now starting to be rolled out which do not have these restrictions. You can read more about HTTP/2 here (coming soon).

5 Website Speed Tools that You Can Use

The following is recommended tools to check your website speed:

1. Google PageSpeed Insights

Google PageSpeed Insights](https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/) is a service free by Google that measures the speed of your website for both desktop and mobile versions of your website. The score gives a range between 0 and 100, with the higher score being better. Google indicates that a score of 85 or more means the page is performing well. The report produced shows detailed recommendations and insights on how you can improve your PageSpeed score, along with an indication of importance.

PageSpeed Insights measures performance on two things:

The time until the page begins to render

The time until the page is fully loaded

2. Pingdom

Pingdom is probably one of the most popular website speed test tools, and the one we use the most ourselves. To use Pingdom Tools you just enter in your website address, and then it will summarize your webpage performance at the top with four metrics:

Performance grade.

Requests.

Load time.

Page size.

Below the summary you will find further information divided into four different sections:

Waterfall breakdown

Performance grade

Page analysis

History

The page analysis offers an excellent overview of additional information such as a size analysis, size per domain (you can easily compare your CDN assets size vs. your domain), the number of requests per domain, and what type of content had the most requests.

3. GTMetrix

GTmetrix is a little more detailed than Pingdom Tools, and for that reason, many people prefer it over other tools. GTmetrix provides the following information:

PageSpeed and YSlow scores — The GTmetrix score is an average of the PageSpeed and YSlow scores. The arrow next to the score indicates whether you are faster than other websites analyzed by them.

Recommendations — You will receive a full list of actionable recommendations, prioritized by importance \ potential gains.

Page Load Details (time, size, the number of requests) — These give a great overview of your page speed. Also, the results are color coded so you can see how you compare with other websites.

Waterfall, Video, and Report History — This allows you to see \ determine how your page assets load and troubleshoot any delays. The history allows you to see how any changes you make have affected the website speed.

To get the most out of GTmetrix, we highly recommend you register with them for free. By doing so, you will get access to more features, including testing using different browsers, connection types (i.e. see how your website loads with a slower connection).

One feature we particularly like is the video playback option. This allows you to playback your page load, at your chosen speed, so you can see precisely where any bottlenecks occur.

4. WebPageTest

WebPageTest was a first created as an internal tool for AOL, and subsequently made open source in 2008. As such the interface is a little more dated, and the speed of the test is a bit sluggish, especially if you get stuck in a queue behind other users.

That being said, it does have some great features such as being able to choose from over 40 locations around the world, over 25 browser types. It also tests the page speed twice, so you can see what effects (if any) a DNS lookup will have on your initial page load. On completion of the test you will be assigned a grade from A to F based on the following:

First Byte Time

Keep-alive Enabled

Compress Transfer

Compress Images

Cache Static Content

Effective Use of CDN

The things they test for is somewhat limited, and not as comprehensive as some of the above tests mentioned.

WebPageTest also has more advanced features as well such as video capture, disabling JavaScript, ignoring SSL certificates, entering authentication to test password protected pages, and spoofing user agent strings among other things.

5. DareBoost

DareBoost is one of the newer tools on the market, and having tested it for the first time while writing this article is now one of our favorites. You will need to register for free to make full use of the tool.

Dareboost makes various checks (over 100 in total) in each of the following areas:

Accessibility — Checks for Descriptions in form fields, noscript tags (i.e. if something is readable when the user has JavaScript disabled), if “lang” is specified (for screen readers), etc.

Browser Rendering — Tests whether JavaScript is deferred, slowest resources, duplicate scripts, etc.

Cache Policy — Checks for Expire Headers, inline script lengths, query strings on static resources, etc.

Compliance — Checks for correct Font formats, Silverlight plugin usage, flash resources, etc.

Data Amount — Checks for things like optimized images, minification, page size, etc.

Number of Requests — Checks whether you could combine JavaScript files, redirects, unreachable resources, etc.

Quality — Looks at HTML code quality

SEO — Checks for basic SEO matters, such as H1 tags, number of links on page, meta description, etc.

Security — Checks whether you are protected against popular malicious web attacks, such as XXS attacks. It also checks SSL issues.

Each test is given a score between 0 and 100 so you can get an indication of how well your website is doing.

Web Hosting Recommendation for Fast Website Speed

If you’ve landed on this page, you’re probably looking for a new web host. But you’re not looking for just any web host – you’re researching on the most reliable, fastest web hosting you can get because you know how crucial it can be for online businesses. Here we go!

1. ASPHostPortal

We’ve made it clear before that we absolutely LOVE ASPHostPortal. In fact, we made the switch from Godaddy Hosting to ASPHostPortal few years ago and we never looked back! They’re officially ASP.NET endorsed (it’s kind of a big deal, guys!), and that kind of recognition is only given out to web hosts that meet ASP.NET’s lofty criteria.

Our preferred package is their entry level Host Two Plan; super affordable at around $8.00 per month but comes packed with benefits and features. You get to enjoy priority support, SuperCacher, Automatic Daily Backups and Free restores.

We have tested our site to host with them. Speed wise, ASPHostPortal is ranked A+ with a worldwide average of 108 ms. Very fast!

2. HostForLIFEASP.NET

If you want to host your site in European data center, then you best pay attention cause you’re gonna want to read about HostForLIFEASP.NET.

Both ASPHostPortal and TMDHosting are hosting provider that have been in ASP.NET hosting business for more a decade. Both are really popular if you are looking for ASP.NET hosting service. In this article review, we will compare their ASP.NET hosting service.

For anyone looking to host ASP.NET Core website, you know that some hosting providers can be flaky at best. They may have poor customer service, be hard to migrate to, or not have the security features you and your potential readers or customers need.

With, hosting providers are and, by extension, your website is far from immune from hacking attempts and malware. With burst attacks and automated scripts becoming the new norm, you need to look for a host that has security as a priority.

If one or both of these companies has caught your eye, this comparison article contains information you need to know. Below I’ve listed the five most important things for a ASP.NET host to excel at and then shown how ASPHostPortal vs TMDHosting plays out in each category.

What Makes a Great ASP.NET Hosting Provider?

There are four main factors that determine whether a ASP.NET Core hosting provider will fulfill all of your needs or make you regret spending your time and money on their services. These are those five factors:

Speed and Uptime

If you want to host your ASP.NET Core site, it is really important for you that your site load quickly no matter who’s viewing it or what that page’s content is. If your site is slow or down, people will leave your site.

Pricing

Price is also the important factors to select ASP.NET Core hosting provider. How much your budget that you want to spend. That’s what I’ll be letting you know in the pricing section.

Support and Resources

If you have issues or questions, how long the support team will answer you? How good is the answer be?

Backup Plan

How secure is your hosting provider? If your ASP.NET Core site being attacked or infected by worm/malware, can they easily fix the issue and recover your files? This is really important factor since not every provider have good backup plan.

Depth Review ASP.NET Core Hosting (ASPHostPortal vs TMDHosting)

ASPHostPortal and TMDHosting are very close competitors in a number of categories. One does ultimately stand out as the prime choice once all criteria have been considered. The other is a decent ASP.NET Core hosting provider but falls short outside of hosting small, static, low-traffic sites.

Speed and Uptime

When reviewing ASPHostPortal vs TMDHosting, speed was of the utmost importance. No matter why you want to have a website, if you’re looking into hosting, you must want it to gain some attention and traffic on the web.

In order to get the most traffic, or at least appeal to your site’s target users, your website needs to be fast and stable. That means you need the fastest hosting environment.

ASPHostPortal

ASPHostPortal is incredibly stable. Even when compared to the uptime of the most popular ASP.NET Core hosting providers, ASPHostPortal is clearly a leader when it comes to keeping things running smoothly. With ASPHostPortal, you can rest assured that your website will stay up with hardly a blip.

On their website, ASPHostPortal claims to have 99.9% uptime and will load, on average, up to 10 times faster than some of their top competitors (including HostGator and Godaddy). In several private tests, those claims have held water.

We have tested their uptime guarantee and the following is the result that we get:

We also tested their speed using Time to First Byte (TTFB) and the following is the result:

As you can see above, the average response time is around 0.007 -0.3 second, it means below 0.5 second, just imagine if your ASP.NET Core site host with them, it will run very stable and fast.

TMDHosting

TMDHosting also boasts a high average uptime of 99.9%. And their load times are a little shorter than the average (though only by a handful of milliseconds).

TMDHosting has made a few notable innovations when it comes to uptime. First, they have a proactive server monitoring program that automatically scans and corrects common server issues without the need for their technicians to be involved. This saves time and keeps your site online.

We have tested their uptime and we find that they also have great uptime guarantee like ASPHostPortal. Only the speed matter, we have found that ASPHostPortal faster than TMDHosting. See below:

As you can see above, sometimes TMDhosting can’t perform well in several countries and it takes around 1 second to load. If you compare with ASPHostPortal, ASPHostPortal only 0.3 second to load.

Who is the Winner?

ASPHostPortal won this category. Though uptime is similar with both candidates, ASPHostPortal’s emphasis on smaller, lighter sites helps them keep their site load times as short as possible the first time a visitor reaches your ASP.NET Core website.

Pricing

Though each company has its own price points and packages, what you do get overall can easily be compared between ASPHostPortal vs TMDHosting.

ASPHostPortal

Offering shared, Cloud, Reseller and Dedicated hosting services, ASPHostPortal has a lot of different ASP.NET Core hosting plans to choose from.

Their most basic, least expensive plan starts at just $0.99 per month for shared hosting. It offers optimization for ASP.NET site, and is just as fast as shared hosting can get.

If you’re looking for a dedicated server, you can get set up for just $12.99 per month. These servers are completely isolated and perfect for anyone who wants to minimize load times or needs complete control over how their hosting resources are allocated.

TMDHosting

TMDHosting offers a number of hosting plans with minimal options. These are meant to be streamlined for users new to ASP.NET Core hosting. That means if you’re not comfortable with the technical side of things, TMDHosting is there to hold your hand during the process.

On the basic side, they offer shared hosting at only $3.99 per month. However, unlike ASPHostPortal Hosting’s basic plan, TMDHosting limits the amount of hosted domains, you can only host 6 websites and the number of visitors you can have to just 10,000 per month on this plan.

If you’re looking to invest in dedicated hosting, TMDHosting offers a basic server for $79 per month. That is more than double what ASPHostPortal Hosting charges, and the servers come with hard limits on storage.

The Winner is

ASPHostPortal Hosting gives you the most options, as well as the best value for your money. You get more storage, better control, and growth options that make sense for every level of website or web business.

Support and Resources

If you have problems or issue, who does a better job supporting their customers?

ASPHostPortal

ASPHostPortal knows what they’re talking about when it comes to just about any issue you could possibly have in regard to hosting. They are there for you every day, every hour of the day, every day of the year.

Responses take minutes for simple queries and less than a day to answer if they’re technical or require a specialist of some kind.

In addition to stellar customer support, ASPHostPortal Hosting offers free website migration. This migration process takes a little more time than other ASP.NET Core hosting providers, but once migration is complete, you can rest assured that any hiccups you may encounter post-transfer will be taken care of swiftly.

TMDHosting

The customer support at TMDHosting is great, if a little basic.

If you have a small website or are completely dedicated to ASP.NET website, then TMDHosting can help you there. If you want to be more in control or need to ask technically advanced questions, it may take some time for your issues to be escalated to the right agent.

TMDHosting also offers website migration or transfers, but it is not free. TMDHosting promises that these transfers will be complete within 24 hours.

Who is the Winner?

We can say both of them are good in customer support. They will address all customers issue very quickly and solve the problem on the spot. Only TMDHosting doesn’t offer free migration.

Backup Plan/Security

Security can be a difficult thing to quantify. You have to consider both what a ASP.NET Core hosting provider does to protect clients in a shared, VPS, or cloud hosting environment, as well as what they do to protect them once hosted and to protect anyone who visits a website with questionable integrity.

ASPHostPortal

The security of ASPHostPortal is more than acceptable. Security issues are often most visible when you’re looking at downtime. As ASPHostPortal has little downtime across all users, it’s easy to see that they are doing a great job at preventing threats.

They now offer FREE SSL certificate powered by Let’s Encrypt. For paid SSL, it will start from $42.00/year.

TMDHosting

TMDHosting is very serious when it comes to security. So serious in fact, that many users complain that their websites or files are isolated or quarantined for absolutely no reason. While this is good news for some, it can create a bit of “unreported” downtime for some customers.

As a positive, TMDHosting makes it easy for all of their customers to make the most of free Let’s Encrypt SSL certificates on any number of websites or accounts.

Final Verdict – You Know the Answer

After all factors are considered in this ASPHostPortal vs TMDHosting review, you can clearly see that ASPHostPortal is the winner. Not only does it offer great compatibility with ASP.NET Core website and better uptime than nearly anywhere else, it has reasonable prices and generous storage limits.

That said, TMDHosting is still a decent hosting provider. They have a number of low-cost options that may work best for anyone new to ASP.NET website and web hosting.

In review, if you plan on growing your ASP.NET Core website into one with high traffic and generous storage needs or want a dedicated server, ASPHostPortal will be the better choice.

Founded back in 2001, A2Hosting provide wide variety of web hosting services. They started from Linux hosting first and then they spread their wings to Windows Hosting. They have been the priority choice for beginners because their cost-effective solutions. However, in the past 4 months, they continuous decrease like speed and technical support and finally BOOOMMMMMM!!!! At past Apr 2019, they had issue with their Windows Server, all their Windows Server down!!

What happened with them? We followed about their news, their social media, users’ experience, and we found that their windows server have been attacked. A ransomware infection has crippled A2hosting until today and it impacted to all of their Windows Server.

The following is few status that we find on their Twitter timeline:

Customers can’t get their data and all works are gone, A2Hosting work as best as they can to recover their data. We have monitored them until now and most of the files can’t be recovered. Maybe if you read this article, you are one of their customers.

TIME TO MOVE ON! Honestly, this is big lesson for us, we can’t ever trust hosting provider, if we have important files, that we may need to backup it on our end. So, if bad things happened, we can just migrate to other providers and no need to wait anymore.

Maybe you are asking me about other ASP.NET hosting providers that can be trusted. I will share it here and this is my personal experience using their ASP.NET hosting service. Although they are not big as EIG or other famous hosting providers, but this is unbiased review and you can consider them if you are looking for best and reliable ASP.NET hosting.

You want your ASP.NET site to load lightning-fast. And if you’re like most of us, when you think of improving your site’s page load times to get that “lightning-fast” designation, you think of your Google PageSpeed Insights score.

For many website owners, it’s their white whale. Getting a perfect score on PageSpeed Insights is the impossible quest that will magically solve all of their page speed woes.

But is a high PageSpeed Insights score the be-all and end-all of fast page load times? Sorry, but no. If your focus is on improving your site’s page load times, finding a better ASP.NET host will often take you further.

In this post, I’m going to run a real test to show you that high-performance hosting will do more for your page load times than endlessly striving to improve your PageSpeed Insights score.

Google PageSpeed Insights. What is it?

If you’re not already familiar, PageSpeed Insights is a Google-offered tool that helps you both analyze and optimize your website’s performance for desktop and mobile visitors. Before I get into what exactly that entails, let’s talk about what PageSpeed Insights is not:

It’s not a tool that gives you a real number for how long your page takes to load. You need other tools for that. Instead, PageSpeed Insights gives you a score from 0-100 based on how well your site is technically optimized, with separate scores for desktop and mobile.

To calculate this score, Google uses two metrics (direct quote):

time to above-the-fold load: Elapsed time from the moment a user requests a new page and to the moment the above-the-fold content is rendered by the browser.

time to full page load: Elapsed time from the moment a user requests a new page to the moment the page is fully rendered by the browser.

And while Google’s suggestions are important, they readily admit that the test “only considers the network-independent aspects of page performance”. That means PageSpeed Insights does not, among other aspects, directly consider the speed of your host.

So while PageSpeed Insights gives you great suggestions for speeding up the technical aspects of your page, getting a perfect score on PageSpeed Insights will never be enough to completely overcome a slow host.

In Google’s own words, the “absolute performance of the page will still be dependent upon a user’s network connection.”

* It should be noted that Google is also talking about a visitor’s personal Internet speed.

Is it Really Important to have High PageSpeed Score?

Plenty of data says that users care about how quickly your page loads in absolute terms. Akamai found that, at least for eCommerce sites, 30% of users want sites to load in under 1 second. And on mobile, 74% of users will abandon a site that takes longer than 5 seconds to load.

But as we learned in the previous section, PageSpeed Insights does not calculate the absolute page load time of your site.

So, is it Important to have High PageSpeed Insights?

Yes and no. A higher PageSpeed Insights score will likely improve the speed of your website. It will get you a quicker loading site.

But here’s the thing:

Your website will only ever be as fast as the hardware that’s powering it. A high-quality web host and good caching will almost always take you further than a 25-point improvement in your PageSpeed Insights score.

I have tested my ASP.NET site in ASPHostPortal hosting, with simple ASP.NET site.

Using those settings, I’ll run each site through PageSpeed Insights and use Pingdom Tools (testing from San Jose) to calculate the absolute page load time for each site. I’ll use PageSeed Insights’ Desktop score for the purposes of this test.

Testing Result – PageSpeed Insights vs Faster ASP.NET Hosting

After running the tests and crunching the numbers, here are the results I came up with.

ASPHostPortal Test 1 – Unoptimized PageSpeed Insights score:

My unoptimized ASPHostPortal test site had a mediocre PageSpeed Insights score of 66/100:

Pingdom’s calculated page load time was better than I expected, clocking in at 2.00 seconds. That’s actually not horrible. But remember that I’m testing on a dummy site without much content:

ASPHostPortal Test 2 – Optimized PageSpeed Insights score:

After making the tweaks I mentioned above, I got the PageSpeed Insights score for my ASPHostPortal test site up to 90/100. A major improvement from 66 and worthy of the coveted “green” seal of approval:

So what was the effect on actual page load times? A marked improvement to 947 ms.

Summary

I don’t want you to come away from this post thinking that you should ignore Google PageSpeed Insights. The people at Google are way smarter than I am. They know what they’re doing.

All I’m saying is this…

Focus most on what’s actually important – absolute page load times. PageSpeed Insights is not the end of your optimization journey. Nor should it always be your primary focus.

When it comes to absolute page load times (the important thing!), switching to a faster ASP.NET host and implementing good caching will have a much larger effect than trying to go from 66 to a 90 PageSpeed Insights score on sub-par hosting.
